55-Gallon Water Barrel Setup: Filling, Treating, Siphoning, and Rotating

A 55-gallon barrel is the cheapest way to store a serious amount of water at home — about two weeks for a family of four at the official planning figure. It is also the setup people get wrong most often, usually in one of three ways: the wrong container, the wrong bleach ratio, or no realistic way to get the water back out.

Here is the whole procedure, with the safety numbers traced to CDC and EPA rather than to prepper forums, where they are frequently mangled.

How much water, and what a barrel actually covers

FEMA’s guidance is to store at least one gallon per person per day, for drinking and sanitation, and CDC frames the baseline as one gallon per person per day for three days. A normally active person needs about half a gallon of drinking water daily; the rest of that gallon is hygiene.

FEMA and the Red Cross also note that people in hot environments, children, nursing mothers, and anyone ill will need more.

So one 55-gallon barrel is roughly 13 days for a family of four, or about eight days if you are being realistic about a hot summer outage. That is why the barrel is attractive — it does in one container what forty cases of bottled water would do, at a fraction of the cost and footprint.

The container: what qualifies and what does not

CDC’s specification for a water storage container is that it has a top that closes tightly, is made of durable unbreakable material — explicitly not glass — and has a narrow neck or opening where possible, so you can pour from it without hands or objects going inside. That last point is the real reasoning: the common recontamination route is a dipper or a hand, not the plastic itself.

For a barrel, you want food-grade HDPE, typically blue, with two bung openings in the lid. Blue is not decorative — the industry uses it to mark potable water containers and the color blocks some light.

One myth worth killing: the recycling code is not a safety certification. A #2 HDPE stamp identifies the polymer and nothing else. HDPE is used for milk jugs and for motor oil bottles. “Food grade” is a separate question about colorants, additives, and food-contact compliance. Neither CDC, EPA, nor FEMA treats the resin code as a safety indicator.

Never use a container that held toxic chemicals — CDC is explicit about bleach and pesticide containers. Empty bleach jugs are not food-grade and repurposing them is a genuinely bad idea, however clean they look.

And do not reuse milk jugs or juice containers. FEMA and the Red Cross give the reason directly: milk protein and fruit sugars cannot be adequately removed and provide an environment for bacterial growth. Oregon State adds a second, independent problem — milk jugs are made from a plastic designed to break down, so they develop leaks.

Step one: sanitize the barrel

This is where most articles go wrong, because sanitizing the container and disinfecting the water are two different procedures with two different ratios, and they get conflated constantly.

CDC’s container procedure, in order:

  1. Wash the container with soap and rinse completely with water.
  2. Sanitize with a solution of 1 teaspoon of unscented liquid household chlorine bleach in 1 quart (4 cups) of water — bleach containing 5% to 9% sodium hypochlorite.
  3. Cover tightly and shake so the solution touches all inside surfaces.
  4. Wait at least 30 seconds, then pour the solution out.
  5. Let the container air-dry before use.

For a barrel you obviously cannot shake, roll it and tip it end over end so the solution wets the entire interior, including the underside of the lid and around the bungs.

One point of disagreement worth knowing: CDC says pour out and air-dry with no rinse. FEMA and the Red Cross say rinse the sanitizing solution out with clean water afterward. Both are defensible. If you rinse, rinse only with water that is already safe to drink — rinsing a sanitized container with untreated well or creek water undoes the entire exercise.

Use plain unscented bleach only — no scents, no splash-less formulations, no added cleaners. And note that bleach itself degrades; a jug more than about a year old is weaker than the label says.

Step two: fill it, and know whether you need to treat it

If you are on municipal water, add nothing. Oregon State Extension puts it plainly: city water from municipal sources is already treated to be safe, so no additional treatment is necessary. FEMA and the Red Cross say the same — if your utility chlorinates, you do not need to add anything to keep stored water clean.

That single fact eliminates a great deal of bad advice. Adding bleach to already-chlorinated tap water is unnecessary and no authority recommends it.

If you are on a well or filling from an untreated source, you disinfect — at a completely different ratio. EPA’s table:

Note that household bleach comes in two common concentrations and the dose differs — check your bottle. Stir and let stand 30 minutes. The water should have a slight chlorine odor; if it does not, repeat the dose and wait another 15 minutes.

If the water is cloudy, let it settle and filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter first, then double the bleach. EPA notes that disinfection does not work as well when water is cloudy or colored.

At 55 gallons and 6% bleach, that is roughly 440 drops — about 4½ teaspoons. Measure it; do not eyeball it.

The sanitizing solution is roughly thirty to fifty times more concentrated than the drinking dose. Never drink it, and never treat stored water at the sanitizing ratio.

Step three: placement, before you fill

Do this first, because a full 55-gallon barrel weighs about 460 pounds. Water is 8.34 pounds per gallon, so 55 gallons is 459 pounds plus roughly 20 for the barrel. That is a piano sitting on one square foot of floor.

Practical consequences:

  • Place it before filling. You will not move it afterward.
  • Ground floor or slab, ideally. If you are considering an upper floor, that load is concentrated and worth thinking about honestly.
  • Put it on wood, not directly on concrete. Two pieces of scrap lumber or a pallet. Concrete wicks moisture and cold, and chemicals from a treated slab can migrate into plastic over time.
  • Keep it out of sunlight. Light drives algae growth even through opaque plastic.
  • Away from gasoline, pesticides, and solvents. Plastic is permeable to vapors, and stored water will pick up fumes from anything sharing the space. A garage with a mower and a gas can is a poor location.
  • Cool and stable. Temperature swings accelerate everything undesirable.

Step four: getting the water out

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that decides whether the barrel is useful. A 55-gallon drum with two bung openings on top has no tap and cannot be tipped by one person.

You need three things:

  • A bung wrench — the plastic or metal tool that opens the two threaded caps. They are torqued down and will not come loose by hand.
  • A siphon pump sized for a drum, long enough to reach the bottom.
  • A dedicated food-grade hose, used for nothing else. A garden hose will contribute its own flavor and is not intended for drinking water.

Store all three with the barrel. A siphon pump in a drawer across the house during an outage is a siphon pump you do not have.

Rotation, and how long stored water actually keeps

Water does not expire. What degrades is the container and whatever gets into it.

The common guidance is to replace home-filled stored water every six to twelve months. That is a conservative default rather than a hard safety limit — properly sanitized municipal water in a sealed, opaque, cool container stays fine considerably longer. Commercially bottled water carries its own manufacturer date, and CDC considers unopened commercially bottled water the safest and most reliable source in an emergency.

Practical approach: mark the fill date on the barrel with a paint marker, and rotate annually onto the garden or the lawn rather than agonizing about it. Refilling is cheap.

Commercial “water preserver” additives claim five-year storage. They are typically stabilized chlorine compounds and they do work as advertised, but no federal authority endorses a specific product or duration. If you use one, treat its claim as the manufacturer’s, not as guidance.

Signs of a problem, and what to do

Cloudiness, visible growth, a slimy film on the interior wall, or a strong off odor all mean the water should be discarded or treated before drinking. Green tint means light reached it, which means the barrel is in the wrong place.

Water that has simply gone flat or tastes stale is fine — pour it between two clean containers a few times to re-aerate it. EPA suggests exactly this for water that tastes strongly of chlorine.

Suspect water can be re-treated at the EPA disinfection ratio above, or boiled. Boiling is the most reliable method — a rolling boil for one minute, or three minutes above 5,000 feet per EPA. Note that CDC uses 6,500 feet as its threshold; using the lower figure is the conservative choice.

What not to do

  • Do not store water in glass for your primary supply. Every federal authority rules it out on breakage grounds, and the events that cut your water are the events that break glass.
  • Do not use a water heater or toilet tank as a planned supply. They are emergency sources of last resort, not storage.
  • Do not fill a bathtub bladder and call it storage. Those are for filling when a storm is forecast — hours of use, not months.
  • Do not treat municipal water “just in case.” It is already treated.
  • Do not skip the pump. A barrel you cannot access is decoration.

Frequently asked questions

Can I store the barrel in an unheated garage where it freezes? Not full. Water expands about 9% when it freezes and will split a rigid barrel or bulge it permanently. If your storage space freezes, either leave real headspace, keep the barrel somewhere heated, or use smaller containers you can move indoors.

Do I need a filter if I have stored water? Not for water you sanitized and stored properly — it was potable going in. A filter matters when you are drawing from an unknown source after your stored supply runs out, which is a different problem worth solving separately.
